PIERRE AND MARIE CURIE
Pierre and Marie Curie were a deeply devo- ted couple, whose genius and keen interest in scientific research were beautifully matched. To Madam Curie goes the honour of actually discovering radium, but it is certain that Pier- re's work paved the way for her disco- very. In radium they found a new and yet in- calculably potent weapon in the war against disease. Yet they refused to derive any in- come from their discovery since they felt that "radium is an instrument of mercy and it be- longs to the world". They were awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery. When Pierre's untimely death in a road accident broke up the ideal partnership, Marie bravely carried on, winning another Nobel Prize in 1911. But des- pite success and honours, Marie remained a simple, intense and deeply humble woman of whom Albert Einstein said -"Marie Curie is of all celebrated beings the only one whom fame has not corrupted."
