THE FRENCH REVOLUTION
In the 1770's the people in France saw how successful the Americans had been in their fight against the King of England. Not long afterwards they rebelled against their own king and the absolute monarchy in France. Though often dated from July 14, 1789, the day of the storming of the Bastille, the seeds of the French Revolution can be traced to various factors; Louis XVI, the shy, well-meaning King who preferred hunting to the affairs of the state, Marie Antoinette, the Austrian princess who was never accepted by the French people and whose extravagances earned her the nickname Madame Deficit, the ruinous wars waged by France, the unjust taxes on the common man and the ideas of liberty, equality and fraternity forwarded by French philosophers. During the revolution, to the people of France, the magical keyword was the Republic, to which they swore loyalty and for which they perished by thousands.
