Prince Mukuta-Shekhara of Varanasi and his friend, the minister's son, go hunting in the jungle. They stop at a temple near a lake to rest. While there, a beautiful princess named Padmavati arrives with her maids. When the princess sees the prince, she uses a secret sign language with a lotus flower to send him a message: She removes the flower from behind her ear and bites it, meaning she is the daughter of King Dantavat of Karnataka. She places the lotus under her foot, revealing her name is Padmavati. She presses it to her heart to show she loves him. The prince falls in love but doesn't understand the signs.
