SYNOPSIS
Puro, the daughter of the Shah of Chatthoani village in pre-independence India, is pretty and intelligent. She is engaged to Ramchandra of Rattowal village. One day, lost in the dreams of her marriage, Puro is returning after collecting vegetables from the fields, when a man kidnaps her on his horseback. His name is Rashid and he does this in order to settle scores with the Shah family over an old enmity. He keeps her locked in a room at his farm. After fifteen days, Puro manages to escape and return home, but her parents do not accept her. She decides to end her life but Rashid meets her on the way. Rashid takes her to his home and later marries her against her wishes. Rashid loves Puro with all his heart, but Puro is not prepared to accept him initially. She becomes the pillar of strength for an orphned girl Kammo and a helpless and sick girl Taro. She adopts an orphaned infant left behind by a deranged woman. With time, Rashid wins over Puro's heart. During the communal riots of 1947, when the Hindus are fleeing from their villages, she meets Ramchandra in a caravan heading for India. Ramachandra tells him how he lost his sister, Lajo, on the way. Puro takes it upon herself to locate Lajo and and reunites Lajo with her family.

About The Author

Amrita Pritam was born on 31st August 1919 at Gujaranwala in Punjab. She is regarded as the first female poet in Punjabi. She has authored more than 100 books which include her renowned autobiography titled 'Revenue Stamp'. Amrita Pritam is among those writers whose works have been translated into many languages. Her first anthology of poems, Amrit Lehren was published in 1936, when she was 16 years old. It was in the same year that she married Pritam Singh, and changed her name from Amrita Kaur to Amrita Pritam. Her writing career spanned over six decades, in which she wrote poetry, fiction, biographies, essays and folk songs. Some of her prominent novels are Paanch Baras, Lambi Sadak, Pinjar, Adalat, Kore kagaz, and Saagar aur Seepiyan. Amrita Pritam was honoured with Sahitya Akademi award in 1975, Award of Language Department granted by the Government of Punjab in 1978, Bulgaria Berov award in 1988 and Jnanapith Award, the highest literary award in India, in 1982. She was also a recipient of the second highest civil award of India, Padma Vibhushan. Amrita Pritam passed away on 31st October 2005 at Delhi.
