Synopsis
In Prisoners of the mind, Ajney has presented the ideology, beliefs, and way of life of the intellectual elite. It shows us the changing face of the Indian upper class, and the values that they share. Some critics consider this novel autobiographical in nature. Chandramadhav and Bhuvan have know each other from college days. Chandramadhav works as a correspondent in a leading newspaper in Lucknow. Bhuvan is an M.Sc in Physics and is engaged in research work. Chandramadhav likes Rekha and wants to spend time with her. He feels that it would be inappropriate to meet her alone. Therefore, he calls Bhuvan to Lucknow so that the three can meet together without any awkwardness. Chandra does not consider Bhuvan as a threat for Rekha's affection because Bhuvan does not mingle with women easily. Surprisingly, Bhuvan and Rekha get along very well. After a few days, the three part ways and Bhuvan goes back to Allahabad. In Allahabad, Bhuvan has a neighbour named Gaura. She is a college student and takes tuitions from Bhuvan. With time, her respect for Bhuvan develops into love. What happens next? Read on to find out.

SACHCHIDANAND HIRANAND VATSYAYAN 'AJNEY'
Sachchidanand Hiranand Vatsyayan 'Ajney' was born on March 7, 1911 in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. His childhood was spent in Lucknow, Kashmir, Bihar and Madras. He did B.Sc. in Industrial Science and went to Kashmir for a Cosmic Ray Expedition. He got involved in the independence movement along with other freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad and Sukhdev. He was arrested several times and had to stay in different jails from 1930 to 1936. His famous work, 'Shekhar: Ek Jivani', was written during that period. Apart from being a writer who created true-to-life mutidimensional characters, Agyeya was also a brilliant essayist, critic, journalist, photographer and a poet. Ajney had an imaginative and innovative style of writing. He was a pioneer of the new poetry movement in Hindi and was also involved with the progressive writers' association. He was the founding editor of the magazine, 'Dinaman'. He was also the editor-in-chief of Hindi Daily, 'Navbharat Times." Ajney travelled a lot and taught in many national and international universities as visiting faculty. He was honoured with the Sahitya Akademi award in 1964, for his anthology of poems, 'Aangan Ke Par Dvar'. He also won the Jnanpith Award in 1978, for another anthology of poems, 'Kitni Naavon Mein Kitni Baar'.
He passed away on April 4, 1987 in New Delhi.
