Indian Illustrated Classics is an innovative literary project under which well known novels in seven Indian regional languages will be published in a simple and colorfully illustrated format. The idea is to introduce well known Indian literature and their writers to the reading masses. Each Indian Illustrated Classics book contains six well known novels which are individually summarized in just 32 pages and the entire story unfolds in a colorfully illustrated format. Synopsis
Chandru, the eldest son of Shamanna-Gowramma, is an ambitious young man. His brother, Girish, is happy with what he has. Chandru, sent to America for training by his company, decides to settle there while Girish joins a bank in Bangalore. Chandru marries Jamuna, a rich girl, and Girish is happy with Vinuta, from a middle class family, as his wife. For Gowramma dollar-rich Jamuna is everything and compared to her the other daughter in law, Vinuta, is good for nothing and is taunted at every opportunity. Life in America must be heavenly, dreams Gowramma. But a visit to the US to stay with Chandru is an eye opener for Gowramma. She not only realises that life in America is not all that rosy despite the earnings in dollars, Jamuna had neither any affection nor regard for her. Vinuta now shines as a model daughter in law. She decides to return to India to be with Vinuta but it is too late. Girish and Vinuta have already shifted to Dharwad to lead a tension free life away from Gow- ramma, who realises that dollar is not supreme after all.

About The Author

'Sudha Murty', One of India's most celebrated entrepreneurs, She (born: 1950) is a multifaceted personality. An engineer by profession, she was the first woman engineer to join the re- nowned TELCO; a founder of Infosys, the IT giant; a social worker and a philanthropist. And she is an author too and her reputation as a writer is equally phenomenal. A prolific writer in English and Kannada, she has written nine novels, four technical books, three travel- ogues, one collection of short. stories, three collections of non-fiction pieces and two books for children. Dollar Sose, Mahashweta, Paridhi are some of her novels. Her English creations include 'Wise And Otherwise: A Salute To Life', 'The Magic Drum And Other Favourite Stories' and 'How I Taught My Grandmother To Read And Other Stories'.
Her books have been translated into all the major Indian languages and have sold over three lakh copies around the country. She was the recipient of the R.K. Narayan's Award for Literature, Padma Shri in 2006 and several other felicitations. The sufferings of the people inspire her to write. She writes in Kannada, because she feels that it is her language. "I write because I'm sensitive. All writers are sensitive" says this high profile but unassuming lady of letters.
