Krishna: The Upholder of Govardhana
The Krishna of the Bhagawat Purana may at first seem contradictory. At times, he is content to spend his day tending to cows and playing on his flute. Yet he can single-handedly combat the vicious Kaliya and overpower him. In each episode of Krishna, is a deeper, more esoteric meaning. For believers, the Lila or the divine play of Krishna is not a historic event but an eternal reality—e.g. the longing of the gopikas for Krishna depicted in this volume symbolises the longing of the human soul for God.
Our earlier volumes on the tenth chapter of the Bhagawat Purana depict the birth of Krishna and his early days in Gokul, his encounter and conquest over demons includ- ing Pootana, Trinavarta, Bakasura and Aghasura. When Kaliya the many-headed serpent began to torment the people of Vrindavana, Krishna fought a valiant battle with him and bade him to go away. This
volume narrates the events that occur when Krishna is about seven-years-old.
