KRISHNA: The subduer of Kaliya
The Bhagawat Purana sings of the glory of Vishnu and his incarnations. The tenth chapter on which the present series is based, depicts the story of the life of Shri Krishna Attributed to Vyasa, the author of Mahabharata, the Bhagawat is one of the most popular of the eighteen major Puranas. Krishna, as depicted in the Bhagawat, plays childish pranks one moment and the next moment he reveals to Yashoda, a glimpse of the universe residing within his mouth. He is dancing in the forest one day and killing demons the next. All this may seem puzzling. But each episode has a deeper meaning and can be explained if the actions of Krishna are understood as 'Lila' or divine play. Over the years the Krishna cult became a central part of the bhakti movement that spread throughout India. From the common place rituals to the highest arts, including poetry, drama, dance, music and painting- the Krishna theme was celebrated with de- votion and affection.
In the first volume of our narration of the Bhagawat Purana, was depicted the birth of Krishna in prison, his safe carriage by Vasudeva, his father, to Gokul to escape the wrath of Kamsa, his childish pranks in Gokul and his encounter with a number of demons including Pootana and Trinavarta. This volume describes the events that occur after Nanda (the foster-father of Krishna) and his people leave Gokul for Vrindavan.
